We’ve all heard it said that good sleep habits can positively impact every area of life. Especially when it comes to learning success and getting good grades, getting enough sleep is incredibly important. It is recommended that teenagers get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep per night, but only 15% of teens report getting that much on school nights. Teenagers are also notorious for irregular sleep patterns, meaning they go to sleep and wake up at different times depending on the day of the week. Both lack of sleep and irregular sleep patterns can negatively affect focus during the day and overall grades.
A study done on Harvard students found that those with more regular sleep patterns—they went to sleep at about the same time and woke up at about the same time every day of the week—had significantly better GPAs than those whose sleep patterns fluctuated. Additionally, studies have shown that students with sleep problems (poor sleep, not enough sleep, etc.) not only suffer from lower grades, but they also have more trouble actually learning the material that is presented to them.

If I’m stressed out about a test, shouldn’t I study more rather than go to sleep earlier? Obviously, studying is important. Particularly for students who do online schooling, it can be easy to justify staying up later or sleeping in a little longer, but getting enough sleep and maintaining a regular sleep schedule is absolutely vital in your learning success and overall grades.
