When you’re doing schoolwork in a non-traditional setting, like from your home, it can be easy to get lost in assignments and studying and get hyper focused on completing your tasks so you can be done for the day. If you’re having trouble focusing and staying on task, don’t abuse the option of taking a break, but a short break can be a good goal to work towards as a reward for staying on task. Whether you’re struggling to stay focused or struggling to pull yourself away from your work, it is good to power through sometimes, especially when you’re on a roll, but it’s also important to take breaks regularly to help with stress management and schoolwork productivity. Virtual learning offers incredible flexibility, so make sure you’re taking advantage of your schedule and adding some breaks into your day.
Working in front of a computer is a vital part of the virtual learning experience, but it’s still incredibly important to limit screen time. Sitting in front of a computer for hours on end can cause vision problems, back and neck pain, and stress, and it can seriously inhibit your focus and productivity when you’ve been in the exact same spot for hours on end. For stress management and efficient work ethic, make sure you take a break outside of your normal work environment a few times throughout the day.
If the weather is nice, go outside and get some fresh air. You can take a walk, have a picnic, go for a bike ride, or go on a short hike. You could even schedule extra-curricular activities into the middle of the day so that you can break up your school day into less overwhelming chunks of time. Consider playing on a sports team, going to a dance class, or joining a club of some sort. You can even schedule chores around the house, taking a shower, or walking the dog throughout the day you so get a chance to take a break from your schoolwork.
Even if you’re very focused on an assignment and are making good ground in completing it, it can help to take a step away from your computer and come back in a few minutes with a refreshed mind. Taking a break is hugely beneficial for stress management, as it can help you get a fresh perspective and remind you that you are capable of doing your best and that is all anyone can ask of you.
