Parent Portal

Welcome Parents and Families!

Parent and student looking over laptop.

We’re excited to have you as a critical part of our SDVS educational community. To help with your student’s success at SDVS, please stay connected in the following ways:

Below are some strategies, processes, and FAQs for our SDVS parents and guardians. Please note that it is never a one-size-fits-all approach. Your child's teacher of record will be in touch near the start of the school year and thereafter to help you if you ever have any questions.

Thank you for supporing your student as they learn here with us!

  • Basic Requirements to Enroll

    • In grades 9 to 12+
    • 18 years or younger
    • A resident and able to access classes from the counties of San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Imperial County
    • Willingness to speak with the teacher on a daily basis
    • Attend Mandatory In-Person State Testing, where applicable
  • What is a Teacher of Record (TOR)?

Each student at SDVS has a TOR. This is a credentialed teacher designated as your student’s primary learning partner, guide, and mentor for all things San Diego Virtual School. The TOR will call your student daily and assist and oversee their classes. Need immediate assistance? Contact your student’s TOR.

  • What is a High Quality Teacher (HQT)?

Our HQTs are assigned to classes that they are responsible for grading. Each has a credential in that subject or content area. They are also available to support your student’s learning through live lessons or individual appointments, like tutoring sessions or writing help.

    • Daily Personalized Connection: Students communicate with their dedicated Teacher of Record every day (Monday–Friday), preferably by phone, to set goals, receive academic guidance, and build a personalized assignment plan.
    • Proactive Family Outreach: To ensure no student falls behind, our teachers actively monitor engagement and will reach out directly to families to offer support if a student goes three days without logging in or submitting work.
    • Team-Based Interventions: If a lack of communication or progress extends to 10 days, we partner with parents and our Student Attendance Review Team (SART) to create a customized attendance and academic plan for the student's success.
  • How to re-enroll my student who is already attending?

Re-enrollment begins towards the end of second semester every year. Be on the look out for when this period opens each year to continue your student’s education at SDVS.

    • Tailored Diploma Pathways: Students can choose between a 220-credit College and Career (a-g) Diploma or a 200-credit Career Diploma, ensuring coursework aligns perfectly with their specific post-secondary goals.
    • Flexible Senior Timelines: We offer adaptable pacing for our seniors, including the ability to apply for early graduation, stay for a 5th year to complete missing credits, or take a reduced full-time course load (minimum of 4 classes per semester) if they are already on track.
    • Comprehensive College & Career Support: Through dedicated counselor meetings and our partnership with the California College Guidance Initiative (CCGI), students get hands-on help tracking their "a-g" progress, applying directly to California colleges, and completing their FAFSA.
    • A Proven Track Record of Success: Join a supportive environment with a rising 85% graduation rate, where top-performing, dedicated students are celebrated through our Valedictorian and Salutatorian honors.
  • Join our Parent Advisory Counsel (PAC)

To jump in and impact our school community, consider joining the PAC.

  • Join Principal Diahann Kunczynski for our virtual monthly "Coffee with the Principal" sessions. These informal gatherings are a space for San Diego Virtual School families to collaborate, share feedback, and stay informed on our school’s progress.

    • When: The first Friday of every month at 9:00 a.m.

    • Where: Hosted virtually via Google Meet.

    • Topics: Monthly news, LCAP goal progress, RtI supports, and our "Portrait of a Graduate" framework.
