English 1A: In California English 1, Semester A, you will analyze techniques in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction texts to analyze thematic connections and inform your own writing and in-class discussions.English 1B: In California English 1, Semester B, you will build on analysis and writing skills as you explore drama, historical documents, speeches, and shorter fictional texts.
English/Language Arts is the study of language through the interpretation and analysis of texts. You will examine a collection of diverse, authentic texts and analyze the techniques used by their authors. You will then apply that learning to your own writing, drawing on a wide range of authorial techniques to support your own development as an author and thinker.

English 2A: In California English 2, Semester A, you will closely read classic, modern, and world literature to explore themes, literary elements, and word choice. By reading a variety of informational texts, you will analyze the development of central ideas through the structure and vocabulary. Throughout the course you will compose your own texts and brief analyses to demonstrate your learning.English 2B: In California English 2, Semester B, you will closely read classic, modern, and world literature to explore themes through characterization and the structure of literary texts, including Shakespeare. You will closely read seminal documents to understand how authors develop an effective argument. In the culminating unit, you will use all the skills you have learned in this course to write your own research paper from texts you select.

The instruction covers many types of writing: creative, descriptive, expository, narrative, and persuasive. In this course, you will read and analyze different genres in literature with an emphasis on American literary movements over time. You will also complete writing activities to evaluate literary works with regards to literary techniques, form, and theme.English 3B: In California English 3, Semester B Syllabus, you will study a variety of techniques to improve your reading comprehension and writing skills. The instruction covers several types of writing, including creative, descriptive, and narrative. In this course, you will read and analyze a variety of literary genres with an emphasis on modern American literature and its literary movements. You will also complete writing activities to evaluate various literary works with regards to literary techniques, form, and theme.

English 4A: In California English 4, Semester A Syllabus, you will explore the relation between British history and literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the neoclassical era, including the works of Shakespeare. You will read and analyze a variety of literary works from this time period by using relevant cultural and political history presented in each lesson. In this course, you will also study a variety of techniques to improve your reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar and mechanics. The instruction covers many types of writing: creative, descriptive, expository, narrative, and persuasive. In addition, you will complete writing activities using your analytical and persuasive skills.English 4B: In California English 4, Semester B Syllabus, you will explore the relationship between British history and literature from the romantic period to the modern era. You will read and analyze a variety of literary works from this time in the context of relevant cultural and political history. In this course, you will also study a variety of techniques to improve your reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar and mechanics. The instruction covers many types of writing: creative, descriptive, expository, narrative, and persuasive. In addition, you will complete writing activities using your analytical and persuasive skills.

Expository A: In this course, you will be asked to read a novel, and you will interact with this novel throughout the course. You will analyze the novel based on the lessons you are reading in each tutorial. At the end of the course, you will have built a portfolio with different activities and assignments relating to the book you read. You will be asked to upload your reading journal as the final project in the last unit of the class, so make sure you are writing and reflecting as you read. Expository B: In this course, you will be asked to complete three units. In each unit, there will be three discussion questions and one unit activity. Unit one covers evaluating essays, reading narratives, poetic structure and meaning, and poetry about the place. Unit two covers writing narratives and composing research, and unit three is about presentations.

This one-semester course is intended for you to familiarize yourself with various myths, legends, and folklore from around the world. In Mythology and Folklore, you will describe myths related to the creation of the world, the natural elements, and the destruction of the world. You will identify the main characters of various dynastic dramas, love myths, and epic legends and describe their journeys. You will trace the evolution of folklore and describe folktales from around the world. This course consists of 15 lessons organized into five units, each featuring one or more engaging Lesson Activities. You will grade your work in the Lesson Activities by comparing it to sample responses. Additionally, there is one Course Activity and Discussion in each unit. You will submit the Course Activity to your teacher for grading. -
English Support: The ELL Foundations: Level 1 course offers 32 multicultural reading selections in the
following genres: myths and legends, biographies, poetry, short stories, and articles.
Instructional materials are written at levels aligned to The Lexile® Framework for Reading, a
scientific approach to reading measurement that provides a common scale for matching
reader ability and text difficulty. It links your ability to read to the linguistic complexity of
the selections provided. Alignment to the Lexile® Framework allows you to monitor your
progress within the Lexile® scale. -
Creative writing is a one-semester course. The course begins with an introduction to types of creative writing, including novels and short stories. You will also explore how to craft dialogue for theater, movies, and television. As you progress in the course, you will learn about the different forms and techniques of poetry. You will become familiar with personal narratives, such as speeches. Additionally, you will delve into the world of literary journalism as well as food and travel writing. Finally, you will learn about the steps you need to follow to publish your work. This course consists of 13 lessons organized into four units, five Course Activities, and six Discussions. Each lesson contains one or more Lesson Activities. You will grade your work in the Lesson Activities by comparing it to sample responses. You will submit the Course Activities to your teacher for grading. -
This one-semester course is intended to familiarize you with the different conventions, themes, and elements of Gothic literature through the analysis of representative literary works. The course discusses classics such as Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, Ann Radcliffe’s novel A Sicilian Romance, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Gothic novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It also analyzes Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic short stories, Robert Browning’s Gothic poems, and Emily Dickinson’s poems about death, mortality, and spirituality. Finally, you get a glimpse of Matthew Lewis and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Gothic dramas, learn about Gothic parodies and Gothic subgenres, and discuss contemporary Gothic literature. This course has 12 lessons, 5 Course Activities, and 5 discussions. Each lesson contains one or more Lesson Activities. You will grade your work in the lesson activities by comparing them with sample responses. You will submit the course activities to your teacher for grading.
